Meet the Farm: Spring in the King Valley: A Local's Guide to the Season
Spring is when the King Valley shrugs off winter and gets back to what it does best, good wine, good food, and long, unhurried days outdoors. The hills green up, the cellar doors along Prosecco Road come back to life, and the whole valley feels like it's exhaling. Here's how to spend it.
Wander Prosecco Road
The valley's famous strip of Italian-varietal wineries is worth a full day on its own. Stop into Dal Zotto, the pioneers of Australian Prosecco, for a glass on the lawn and a plate of house-maden pasta. A little further on, Pizzini pours Sangiovese and Nebbiolo grown and made by the same family for three generations, while La Cantina keeps things rustic and unpretentious, handcrafted wine in a shed with a view. Spread across an afternoon with plenty of water and a designated driver, it's the easiest way to taste your way through the region.
Take to the sky
For a different view of the valley altogether, Goldrush Ballooning runs sunrise flights over King Valley in the calmer, cooler air of spring, vineyards, farmland and mist-covered hills laid out below as the sun comes up. It's an early start, but one of the more memorable ways to see this part of the world.
Chase the wildflowers
Spring is the best season for walking here. Head to Powers Lookout, just up the road from Whitfield, for sweeping views over the valley and a walking track that winds through bushland that's at its greenest and most alive this time of year. Pack a thermos and take your time, there's no better season for it.
La Dolce Vita Weekend
If your visit lines up with 21–22 November, don't miss La Dolce Vita Weekend, the King Valley's celebration of its Italian winemaking heritage, with wine, live music and food across the valley's Italian-varietal cellar doors. It's the region at its most festive, and worth building a whole weekend around.
