Ask past guests what they remember most about staying at Bluestone Ridge, and it's not always the outdoor bath or the view from the deck. Often, it's a lot simpler than that: it's the moment they wandered out and said hello to a cow.
We're a working 800-acre cattle farm first, a place to stay second, and in winter that side of the property comes into its own. Here's what it's like to meet the animals this time of year.
Slower Mornings, Closer Encounters
Winter mornings on the farm move at their own pace, mist sitting over the paddocks, the cattle grazing quietly while the frost burns off. There's less rushing about than in the warmer months, which somehow makes the animals easier to approach. Rug up, wander down after breakfast, and you'll usually find our cows unbothered by the cold and happy for the company.
Our goats are, if anything, more entertaining in winter. They're curious, a little cheeky, and always keen to see who's come to visit. Guests often tell us this is the unplanned highlight of their stay, not something you can really book, just something that happens when you slow down enough to notice it.
Why It Matters More Than You'd Think
There's a growing body of research on why time around animals is genuinely good for us, lowering stress, encouraging presence, giving your nervous system a break from screens and schedules. You don't need the science to feel it, though. A few quiet minutes with a cow that has absolutely nowhere else to be has a way of putting a weekend into perspective.
It's also a rare thing these days, a genuine working farm you can actually walk through, rather than a petting zoo built for visitors. The animals here have a job to do and a life of their own.

Take a slow lap before your morning coffee, swing by after a walk on the trails, or just watch from the deck as the cattle move through the paddock below.
