Stretch Your Legs: Scenic Walking Trails Around Bluestone Ridge and the King Valley

There’s something grounding about a good walk, especially when you’re surrounded by rolling hills, the bush, and the fresh air of Victoria’s High Country. While the King Valley is best known for its food and wine, it also offers some incredible walking tracks, from peaceful strolls to more adventurous hikes.

Whether you're staying for the weekend or just looking for a way to walk off a long lunch, here are some of our favourite local walks near Bluestone Ridge

1. Paradise Falls Walk

Distance: 500m return

Location: Alpine National Park (approx. 35 minutes’ drive)

A short, easy walk with a big reward. Paradise Falls lives up to its name especially after rainfall, when water flows in full force over the cliff. Even when dry, it's still a beautiful and peaceful spot worth visiting, with dramatic rock formations and valley views that make it feel special all year round.

The walk from the carpark to the viewing platform takes around 10 minutes, with a well-maintained trail, but be mindful that the large stone steps near the falls can be slippery, particularly after rain. Some visitors may find this section a bit challenging.

Good to know: Pack a picnic or some snacks, there are shaded tables near the carpark, making it a great spot to relax before or after the walk.

2. Lake William Hovell Track

Distance: Choose your distance (flat & easy walking)

Location: Cheshunt (20 minutes away)

Lake William Hovell is a peaceful spot to walk, picnic, or simply unwind. There’s a flat track that follows the lake edge, suitable for all fitness levels, and the scenery is especially stunning in winter and early spring.

Good to know: Keep an eye out for birdlife and kangaroos, mornings are best for spotting wildlife.

You don’t have to go far to enjoy the outdoors, Bluestone Ridge itself is surrounded by open paddocks, quiet country roads, and views that change with the seasons. Step outside for a sunrise stroll with a coffee in hand, or wander at golden hour as the sun dips behind the hills.

Good to know: Ask us for our favourite loop walk that starts right from the property gate. 5. Alpine National Park Trails (For the More Adventurous)

For experienced hikers, the Alpine National Park offers longer trails that take you deeper into Victoria’s High Country. From forested climbs to rocky outcrops with views across the valley, these walks are best suited to those with more time (and sturdy shoes!).

4. Powers Lookout Walk

Distance: 300m loop (plus optional detours)

Location: Whitlands (approx. 20–25 minutes from Bluestone Ridge)

Once a hideout for the infamous bushranger Harry Power, this walk combines history with breathtaking views across the King Valley. It’s a short, well-maintained walk to the lookout platforms, but the views are some of the best in the region, especially at sunset.

Good to know: Bring a jacket, it can get windy on the ridge!

Bring water: Some tracks are remote with no facilities.

Leave no trace: Respect the natural environment and local wildlife.

Pack snacks or stop in town: Pro tip, pack a few pastries from HobbledyHoy or a local bottle of King Valley Prosecco for a post-walk reward.

Whether you're up for a short stroll or a full-day adventure, the King Valley offers plenty of ways to get outside and take it all in, no schedule, no rush, just you and the view.
