Winter at Bluestone Ridge: Fires, Frost and Farm Views
There's a version of the King Valley that only shows up in winter. Mist sitting low over the paddocks in the morning. Frost on the fence line. Wood smoke drifting from the chimneys of Whitfield. It's quieter, slower, and arguably the most beautiful time of year to visit Bluestone Ridge.
If summer at the farm is about long lunches and warm evenings on the deck, winter is about the opposite: rugging up, slowing down, and letting the cold be part of the experience rather than something to escape.
Soak Under a Winter Sky
Our outdoor bathtubs take on a different character in winter. There's something genuinely special about sinking into hot water on your private deck while the air around you is sharp and cold, the valley wrapped in mist below and the Black Ranges dusted with the first light of morning. Add a glass of local red and you've got one of the best reasons to visit the farm between June and August.
Inside, both The Cow and The Goat stay warm and self-contained, with plush beds positioned under a skylight, perfect for watching winter's clear, star-heavy nights without leaving the doona.
Chase the Fireplaces of the Valley
Winter is fireplace season in the King Valley, and you don't have to go far to find one. The Mountain View Hotel in Whitfield, ten minutes from the farm, has a cosy dining room built around an open fire, serving modern Australian food with European influences. Darling Estate's cellar door is another favourite for the colder months, with its own fireplace and views out over the vines toward Mount Cobbler. Between tastings, a slow lunch, and a fire to warm up beside, a cellar door crawl feels completely different in winter than it does in the heat of summer.
Walk the Trails While the Air is Crisp
Our 20km of private trails are at their best on a cold, clear morning, when the paddocks are still and the only sound is your own footsteps. Rug up, take the dogs (well, ours, not literally yours) on a walk to say hello, and climb to the higher points of the property for views stretching toward Mt Buffalo and Mt Buller, often capped with snow this time of year. It's the kind of walk that properly clears your head.
A Season Made for Doing Less
There's no pressure to fill a winter weekend at Bluestone Ridge. Sleep in. Light the fire. Take a slow bath outside while everyone else is stuck in the city. Winter here isn't about ticking things off, it's about giving yourself permission to do very little, very well.
